Degree Level

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Fellowship 2027 is a research-level fellowship for senior academics. It is intended for full professors or academics near full professor rank and is not open to undergraduate, master’s, or PhD students.

Available Subjects

The fellowship supports research in social sciences and humanities, especially projects connected to one or more of the Foundation’s themes:

  • Human Rights and Dignity
  • Responsible Citizenship
  • Canada and the World
  • People and Their Natural Environment

Applicants whose work intersects with these themes and addresses major societal issues are encouraged to be nominated.

Benefits

Each selected fellow receives a fellowship package worth up to $300,000 CAD, including:

  • $70,000 as a fellowship prize
  • $50,000 as a research grant
  • Up to $100,000 in additional research funding
  • Up to $80,000 to cover one year of teaching release, paid to the university

In addition to the financial support, fellows join a national community of scholars, mentors, and public leaders committed to addressing major societal challenges.

The fellowship duration is three years, allowing fellows to focus on impactful research and leadership development.

Eligible Nationalities

The fellowship is open to academics at Canadian universities, regardless of nationality, provided they hold a full-time tenured academic appointment at an eligible Canadian institution.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Fellowship 2027, candidates must:

  • Be a full professor or near the rank of full professor
  • Have a national or international academic reputation
  • Be in the mid-stage of their academic career

Application Procedure

Candidates cannot apply directly. They must be nominated by an eligible Canadian university.

The nomination process includes:

  1. The candidate is identified and nominated by their university
  2. The institution submits the nomination to the Foundation
  3. Applications are reviewed by a peer evaluation committee
  4. Recommendations are made to the Board of Directors
  5. Final fellows are selected by the Foundation
